Lasting Investment in Newport

Hosting the 2010 Ryder Cup in Newport was not only about a few exciting days of golf in October - it was also about putting the city on the map to visitors, sports enthusiasts and businesses.

Newport was already very well located when work started to prepare for the 2010 Ryder Cup.  Since then, major motorway maintenance and key junction schemes have been brought forward by the Welsh Assembly Government to ensure they are completed in good time, Network Rail has completed the new station in Newport, and three new park and ride sites have been created.  During 2009 and 2010, over £5 million was invested in the city of Newport in the run-up to the Ryder Cup, in buildings and public realm, in the year-long 2010 Newport Festival, dressing the city, and in restoring the historic Transporter Bridge.

This lasting legacy of infrastructure is further added to by the investment in golfing activites and opportunities in schools in Newport.  A Ryder Cup-themed education curriculum has been created and shared with schools across Wales and the world, including next Ryder Cup hosts Medina County, US.  On a wider front, Ryder Cup Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government have established a £2m legacy fund to develop more pay and play courses throughout the country.  More than 200 new golf holes have already been created and figures show increasing levels of play.
