Newport Unlimited - Urban Regeneration Company

Newport Unlimited

Overview

Newport Unlimited is the Urban Regeneration Company for Newport, the newest city in Wales.

We were created in 2003 to help counter the impacts of the continued decline in heavy industry and manufacturing in Newport: e.g. in 2001 Corus announced 1,540 jobs would be lost at the Llanwern works; and other firms in Newport announced a further 1,450 jobs would also be lost, mostly in manufacturing.

Our vision is to work with public and private sectors to deliver major physical change and strengthen the economy of Newport. Regeneration projects will improve the landscape, create new jobs, attract investment and ensure a vibrant city for the future.

Our work is focussed across three areas:

Significant progress towards our urban regeneration objectives has been made since 2003:

  • Over £98 million of private sector investment in to Newport.
  • Over 61,000 sq.m. of office and business floor-space.
  • More then 1,100 new jobs (not including construction jobs).
  • More than 244 new residential units completed.
  • More than 4,000 existing homes now with reduced flood risk.
  • Almost 9 hectares of derelict land reclaimed.
  • Delivered key new linkages over the river Usk.
  • Together with our partners, we have set in train projects which will go on to deliver important regeneration in Newport.
