Visiting Newport

So much, so near.

The city of Newport is surrounded by acres of natural beauty, making it a great base to explore the surrounding county from. From wooded river valleys to open moorland and spectacular coastline, Newport has it all.

The Wye Valley and the Brecon Beacons are all well known as areas of outstanding natural beauty. Slightly less well known, the River Usk, designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), is equally beautiful and a haven for wildlife.

More wildlife can be found at the Newport Wetlands Reserve on the tranquil Gwent Levels. Covering over 438 hectares, the wetlands are also an excellent place to see orchids, butterflies, dragonflies and otters.

Caerleon small (2)

Man-made attractions include Caerleon, the site of one of only three permanent Roman Legionary Fortresses in Britain, while a little more up to date, the Grade I listed Newport Transporter Bridge built in 1906 is one of only seven of these industrial wonders left in the world. Just a short drive or train ride away, the neighbouring city of Cardiff holds world-class sporting events and concerts at the Millennium Stadium.

In 2010, the big reason to visit Newport was the the very successful Ryder Cup, held at the Celtic Manor Resort. For more information about visiting the Celtic Manor Resort or playing the 2010 course, click here.

In 2011 a series of events are underway.  Find out by visiting What's On.

If you’ve never visited Newport, this is the year to do it!
