Riverfront-East Bank

The Area:

The East Bank of the River in the City Centre was characterised by derelict industrial uses, the backs of terraced housing, an informal path and poor treatment to the river’s edge. ‘Fly tipping’ is prevalent in the area and connections to the communities of East Newport are poor. Major land uses include the Rugby Club, terraced housing, a school and the city Bus Depot.

Vision:

EB riverside development cgiresizeA new riverfront residential community will emerge in the City Centre on the right bank of the river. The heart of Newport will be rebalanced creating the perception of ‘Newport-on-Usk’ versus a city divided by its river. The framework of future development will extend and connect to the existing Victoria neighbourhood centred around Corporation Road. New views and connections to the river will be created and a continuous waterfront promenade will transform the eastern edge of the Usk.

Both the Rugby Club and the residential communities will be better served from the City Centre via a new pedestrian and cycle bridge directly linking the East Bank District to the heart of the Commercial Core.

Work on Phase 1 of development is expected to start on site during 2007.
Rodney Parade:

  • A new riverfront residential community is planned for the east bank of the river.
  • The £50 million project will include the construction of 480 residential units along the river edge.
  • The Welsh Assembly Government has selected George Wimpey as the preferred developer of the residential units.
  • A safe and inviting pedestrian promenade along the waterfront will pass through the new riverside development and link with a wider network of paths and parks.
  • Empty and derelict buildings between Town Bridge and George Street Bridge have been demolished to make way for the new redevelopment.
  • The vacant Arts College building will be refurbished and converted for new housing.

Latest News:

The £2 million river defence project, which involves raising the land adjoining the river and constructing a 2 km riverside walkway, is now completed and provides additional protection for 4,000 existing homes on the eastern bank of the River Usk. However the riverside walkway will not be open for public use until the residential development is completed.
Phase 1 of the ‘duplex’ residential units south of the Newport City footbridge were completed in 2008, with the next phases expected to start when the UK housing market improves.
