East Newport - Introduction
The closure of the eastern part of the Llanwern Steelworks by Corus in 2002 created a major opportunity for the Eastern expansion of the city.
The East Newport Development Framework sets out the foundation for the investment for the next 20 years and beyond. It details the location of the development, use mix, the pattern of infrastructure and strategic and local access. Ultimately, the Eastern area is expected to accommodate up to 4,000 new homes and account for the much of the expected 20,000 increase in the city’s population.
The Llanwern Steelworks site has been acquired by St Modwen Properties plc, who have submitted a planning application for a major housing development of 4,000 houses, employment land, parks and lakes.
Gallagher Estates has submitted a planning application for 1100 new homes and associated community facilities around Llanwern Village.
Development in the Eastern Expansion Area will play a significant role in the growth of the city re-establishing Newport as a major regional centre once again.
