Newport Unlimited Working in partnership

The Welsh Assembly Government and Newport City Council are working on an ambitious programme to regenerate and revitalise the City of Newport.
The city is currently undergoing one of the greatest transformations of any UK City- creating a new vibrancy which will attract further economic development, as well as enjoyment and pride in Wales's 3rd largest City.

Physical regeneration

As part of this initiative, the Welsh Assembly Government and Newport City Council in partnership set up the Urban Regeneration Company - Newport Unlimited - in 2003 reporting to the Welsh Assembly Government and Newport City Council, to assist the Government and the City Council undertake much of the physical development of areas of opportunity in the city.

Community

The Government and City Council are also funding, and undertaking, a wider social and community development programme and have a number of other partnerships working for the city.

Newport Unlimited

Set up in 2003, the Newport Unlimited partnership aims to lead, or facilitate, the regeneration of three areas:

• Central Area: The heart of the city - revitalised with new shops, leisure facilities, offices, homes, jobs, landscaping and riverside walkways;
• East Newport: A new community will be established on and around land released from the Llanwern Steelworks site creating a new district with 5,000 new homes and local facilities, parks and landscaping and new employment opportunities;
• West Newport: Building on the success of the Newport West Business Parks around junction 28 of the M4, creating thousands of jobs in a high quality international standard business park environment.

Regional and district transport infrastructure

The three development areas will be served and connected by high quality transport links which have already been improved by the opening of the Southern Distributor Road in 2004.
