Newport in 2020

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the City to develop a higher quality of life for its residents.

Newport in 2020 will be a City which is:

prosperous and inviting...

The revitalised City Centre will attract new investment and sustainable employment. More people will live and work in Central Newport, supporting local businesses and retaining wealth within the City. People will choose Newport as a place in which to access their services and cultural opportunities.

an excellent social and retail experience...

The City will have a major new department store and more choice of quality retailers. The improved environment and family-friendly facilities will encourage people to spend more time in Newport, taking the opportunity to have a meal and meet in one of the many new cafés and restaurants.

making the most of its environment...

Newport's best buildings such as the Market and former Arts College will be refurbished and set within new public squares. The River will be transformed into an environmental and economic asset, new development will occur along the riverfront and a continuous riverside walk serving new City parks will be created.

adaptable to change...

New development within Newport will be predominantly mixed use and urban in nature, a ‘step change’ in the quality of buildings will enable the City to adapt to changing economic and social circumstances from local to international without resorting to wholesale redevelopment or improvements.

an interesting and diverse community...

Newport will build upon its strong cultural identity and ‘sense of place’. The University will play an increasing role in developing the cultural base of the City and creative businesses will be actively encouraged. A wide range of annual events will also celebrate the City's diverse nature and culture.

rich in heritage...

Building upon the existing successful heritage initiative the Master Plan’s strategy will ensure that Newport's historical assets are protected and enhanced. The Castle will again become a tourist attraction for the City, and both the Transporter Bridge and Tredegar House will benefit from Newport’s prosperity.

inclusive with increased accessibility...

The development of the City Centre and improved accessibility will help Newport to become one of the most inclusive cities in the UK. More jobs will be centrally located and new training programmes tailored to the needs of new businesses will enable the entire community to access learning and employment opportunities.

a pleasant and safe place to be...

Newport will have a high quality built environment. Traditional buildings will be refurbished and streets and public squares upgraded. More trees and public art will be introduced and landmark buildings, structures and spaces will inform people they are in the City of Newport. Mixed use development will ensure a vibrant and safe day and evening environment.

easy to get to...

Arriving in Newport will be an easy and pleasant experience. The rail and bus interchanges will be remodelled, car parks will be easy to find and dedicated cycleways will be created. The Central Area will be designed to give priority to pedestrians and new signs and information points will lead the way upon arrival in the City.

forward thinking with an excellent environment...

Newport will become a model for other waterfront communities looking to re-engage with the features of their environment. New technologies and innovative architecture for the 21st Century will be promoted. The future ecological, economic and social initiatives will ensure Newport becomes the exemplar sustainable City in Wales.
