Station District

Newport Railway Station

A new gateway into Newport will be created by transforming the existing Railway Station and providing a more appropriate civic space in this important gateway location. Pedestrians will be able to flow directly to the City Centre. Queensway will be transformed into a new urban boulevard.

A new £25 million rail station including:

  • an extension and redevelopment of Platform 4, which will take Intercity trains to London;
  • a new footbridge, which will allow people to cross easily from one side of the station to the other;
  • a light airy concourse, which will lead passengers out onto a landscaped boulevard with slow-moving traffic;
  • a new multi-storey car park in station grounds;
  • a new bus/rail interchange will encourage passengers to use public transport.

Start of work commenced in late 2006, with all phases of the project being completed by 2009 in advance of the staging of The 2010 Ryder Cup.

City Spires Development

Proposals for the wider Station District include a new office district with complementary uses such as retail, housing and hotel development. Modus Properties announced in February 2006 that they had purchased the Cambrian Centre.

Modus propose a new £87 million mixed use scheme for the centre comprising retail, leisure, residential and a 120-bed hotel:

  • 8,547 m2 (92,000 ft2) of retail;
  • 15,700 m2 (169,000 ft2) of residential in a 30 storey tower;
  • 7,432 m2 (80,000 ft2) of offices;
  • car parking facilities for up to 832 cars.

This development will signal the regeneration of this important district of the City Centre.
